MUST-READ BOOKS

Discipleship and Biblical Community

When I first read Life Together as a seminary student, I was deeply convicted about my misunderstanding of church and biblical community. More than that, I realized my own selfishness toward others in the local church and was shocked to see how I had made an idol of “doing church” in the way that I thought was best. Written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and theologian who stood against Hitler and the Nazi regime, this short volume urges Christians to seek not our own good but the good of others, showing us what lies at the heart of true biblical community.

If I could give one lesser-known book to my Christian Studies students or to anyone serving in ministry, it would be this one. In this short volume, Jack Miller, a wise and seasoned pastor, counsels readers on what true servant leadership looks like. Miller’s pastoral insight and personal humility result in a book that truly helps us follow the example of Christ, the Chief Servant who laid His life down for others.

I read this book with two of my best friends when it first came out, and I’m so thankful I did. Many Christians (myself included) can tend to view God not as a loving and gracious Father but as a tyrannical judge who is constantly keeping track of our sins. Yes, God’s wrath will be poured out on His enemies—on those who have not turned to Christ. But for those who have trusted in Jesus, we will never bear the wrath of God. Prior to reading Gentle and Lowly, my faith had grown somewhat cold, but reading this short book warmed my heart. Jesus, the One who is gentle and lowly, reveals the Father to us and shows the deep, abiding love the Triune God has for His children.

How do you “delight” in the Trinity? When I first read the book’s title, I have to admit I laughed a bit. But when I came to understand the Trinity not as some theological concept but as the true nature of the God who created the world, I could genuinely see and believe that God desired to love me. If you are a Christian who struggles to believe that God loves you, please read this book. And if you do not believe in God but are willing to explore what the God of the Bible is really like, please read this book. It’s relatively short and will be worth every minute you spend.

In this follow-up book to Delighting in the Trinity, Michael Reeves helps readers rejoice in Christ, recognizing that Jesus did not simply bring us good news—He IS the good news. As the publisher’s note explains, “[I]n an age that virtually compels us to look at ourselves, Michael Reeves calls us to look at Christ. As we focus our hearts on him, we see how he is our life, our righteousness, our holiness and our hope.”

All of us have struggles in our relationships, whether with our friends, spouses, coworkers, or other loved ones. In this thorough and practical book, Ken Sande offers godly wisdom and immensely helpful suggestions for resolving the conflicts in our relationships. Even if you feel a relationship is beyond repair, consider reading The Peacemaker for godly advice on restoring what is broken.

This is the single best book that has ever been written on the battles against pornography and lust. I greatly appreciate so much of what Joe Rigney writes, but this book is no doubt one of the most important he has ever written. If you struggle with lust and feel trapped in its grip, please read this book.

Desiring God shaped my understanding of what it means to love and delight in God, which spilled over into every area of my life. If you are a Christian who has struggled to understand what it means to truly follow Christ, or if you are an unbeliever who wants to understand what Christianity teaches about why God created the world (and all of us), I encourage you to read this book.
